Jesse Milan Jr. is a lawyer whose career includes leading HIV programs and organizations at regional, national and global levels. In 2016, he was named president and CEO of AIDS United, a national organization focused on HIV policy, grantmaking and capacity building. AIDS United has granted over $130 million, and its grantees and public policy council organizations number more than 200 in 45 states and territories. Milan serves on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and is chair of the board of Funders Concerned About AIDS. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the Infectious Disease Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition board. Previously, he was AIDS director for Philadelphia, vice president at two public health firms and co-chair of the CDC/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatment. He is past board chair of the Black AIDS Institute, the National Episcopal AIDS Coalition and the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium. He served six years as chief of staff to the president of Temple University and was a deputy city solicitor for Philadelphia. He has received honors for his HIV work from the American Bar Association, HRSA and the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, and in 2023, received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Association of Black Princeton Alumni. Milan has lived with HIV for four decades and celebrates 36 years commitment with his husband.
