Myth-changer, Curator, Mentor
Roger Mason (they/them) is an award-winning writer, performer and educator who satirizes and revises history to highlight the biases that separate rather than unite us. Their playwriting has been seen on Broardway, Off and Off Off Broadway, and regionally. Mason’s world premiere of “Lavender Men” at Skylight Theatre was lauded by the Los Angeles Times as “evoking the mingled visions of Suzan-Lori Parks, Jeremy O. Harris and Michael R. Jackson.” Recent productions have garnered Mason a Barrymore Award Recommendation in Philadelphia, Jeff Award Recommendation in Chicago and the San Francisco Chronicle’s prestigious Datebook Pick. Mason is the recipient of the 2024 Playwrights’ Center National Playwright Commission, the inaugural Dramatists Guild Foundation Catalyst Grant Award and the Chuck Rowland Pioneer Award. As a filmmaker, Mason has been recognized by the British Film Institute, the Lonely Wolf International Film Festival and the SCAD Film Festival, among others. Mason associate-produced the Emmy-winning “Book of Queer” for Discovery+ and served as lead researcher for two queer historical series on Disney/Freeform: “This Is How We Got Here” and “Dragged Through History.” They are featured as a historian on the New York Times Critics’ Pick documentary “Outstanding,” currently streaming on Netflix. Mason is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, and a graduate of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab, Page 73’s Interstate 73 Writers Group and Primary Stages Writing Cohort. They are currently on faculty at CalArts and Lambda Literary.
